Grief and Loss
Dealing with the grief and loss of a loved one can be one of the hardest challenges to face. Loss is a natural part of life, and it’s normal to feel shocked, confused, sad, and/or angry. While these feelings usually get less intense as time passes, grieving is an important process that allows you to overcome your emotions, remember and honor the loved one, and embrace the time you had with them.
Here are important steps to get yourself back on track:
-
Talk about it with someone trusted, like a friend or family member. This allows us to better process and cope. Reaching out and spending time with the loved ones of the deceased can also keep their memory alive, through sharing stories of listening to music they loved.
-
When dealing with grief and loss, especially of someone close to you, it’s important to accept your feelings, whether it’s sadness, anger, confusion, or even exhaustion. Accept that these feelings are normal. If these feelings are too overwhelming, seek out professional help from a licensed psychologist or go to therapy.
-
Remember and celebrate loved ones’ lives. Although anniversaries, birthdays, and other holidays can be tough, they are a time for remembrance and honoring the person and their life. Small efforts like donating to their favorite charity or planting a garden in their memory can help you honor the unique relationship you had with that person.
